TAXATION HEADACHES
SOCIALIST LONDON. LONDON, May 22. Taxation headaches have hit Loudon like an epidemic, as the people of London are now learning just what it cost them to stay away from the polls a year logo.' Only a third of the London elec torate took the trouble to vote in the March, 1034, municipal elections, and a Socialist administration was swept into the London County Council, and many boroughs went overwhelmingly Socialist. Now the non-voters ere discovering that municipal taxes, already high, will be higher than ever this year. They can't say they were not warned, fo*r Socialist campaigners last year stated that taxes would be raised to pay for a broader programme of social reform. The London, County Council’s rate of taxation has increased 10Jd for every £1 of rent paid. Municipal taxes in Great. Britain are levied on the rent, nut on the capital value of the property as in the United States. This increase Is to meet the extra £2,750,000 demanded by the London County Council for social services.
