“It is not always understood that the function of chambers of commerce is to cooperate wherever possible with the elected representative of the people on Government bodies,” said Mr A. O. Heany, secretary of the Associated Chambers of Commerce, at a gathering of the Auckland Chamber. “ There is a tendency to think the chamber of commerce does nothing but criticise. This is due to the fact that when there is criticism it attracts attention, whereas when there is co-operation, that is taken as a matter of course. The man who agrees and sets to work quietly is not considered as spectacular in his efforts as the man who boldly criticises. Efforts which are cooperative make no special appeal, and are often ignored by those who watch the work of chambers of commerce.”
