BALL AT WAIKARI.
Switching on Power Celebrated. AN IMPORTANT EVENING. At the invitation of Mr and Mrs A. Cowie, a large number of guests attended the switching on of electricity in the Waikari district on Saturday evening, when a ball was given to celebrate the event. The hall was decorated with coloured electric lights, which were all illuminated try* the switching on by Mrs G. Darroch, the oldest woman resident of Waikari. The chairman of the North Canterbury Power Board (Mr L. B. Evans) addressed the gathering and asked Mrs Darroch to press the button. Mr W. K. McAlpine also spoke and thanked Mr and Mrs Cowie for the enjoyable evening. Mr Evans asked Mrs Darroch to accept an electric toaster as a memento of the occasion.
