Information by cable has been received by the Union Steam Ship Company’s head office that the laying of the keel of the luxurious liner which is being built by Vickers- Armstrong, Ltd., at Barrow-in-Furness, was completed on The new liner, which is intended for the intercolonial service, will be 14,000 gross tonnage, with a length of 544 ft over-all and a beam of 74ft. She will have twin screws, her turbines developing 20,000 shaft horse-power on service, giving a speed under ordinary conditions of about 23 knots, which will enable her to maintain passages between New Zealand and Sydney in two days and a half. Notable features of the vessel will be glassed-in promenade decks, spacious games decks, palm court and observation room, verandah cafe and dance hall, men’s and women’s club-rooms, besides library and writing room, music room, lounge and smoking room, children’s room, gymnasium, talkie picture equipment. lifts, punkah louvre ventilation; all first-class cabins with bedsteads, reading lamps, telephones, radiators, and hot and cold water, with a large number of one and two-berth cabins with private bathrooms.
