MINISTERIAL. The Minister of Public Works, the Hon J. Bitchener, who has been at his home at Waimate for the week-end, returned to Wellington last evening. Mr H. Pettit (Wellington) is a guest at Warner’s Hotel. Messrs T. J. Ilennessy (Wellington) and J. E. Trvon (London) are registered at the Clarendon Hotel. Mr W. Easton, general manager of the “Otago Daily Times,” is staying at the Clarendon Hotel. Mr Edward Armstrong, managing director of Messrs T. Armstrong and Co„ Limited, left last evening on a business visit to Wellington. Mr E. F. C. Hinds was installed as chairman of the New Zealand Cycling Federation at last evening’s meeting of the federation. The Rev F. T. Read was last evening appointed the representative of the Christchurch branch of the New Zealand Returned Soldiers’ Association on the St John Ambulance Association. A motion of sympathy with the rela . tives of the late Mr J. R. Hayward was carried at last evening’s meeting of the New Zealand Cycling Federation. A motion of sympathy with Mr C. h. Bennett, a delegate to the New Zealand Cycling .Federation, on the death of his brother, was carried at last evening’s meeting of the federation. Guests at the New City Hotel include Messrs A. S. Ibbotson and S D Smith (Dunedin), W. 11. Hutton, C J Pugsley, A. E. Davies and R. Burns (Wellington). Mr J. Joel, publicity manager in Aus, tralia and New Zealand for the Columbia. Picture Corporation, -who has been visiting Christchurch, returned to Wellington last evening. Messrs H. H. Le Pine, R. 11. Cate, }} - E. Deverell, L. H. Labone, G. lizuka, H. W. Piper (Wellington), W. A. Boucher (Auckland) and Roland Hill (London) are staying at the United Service Hotel. Dr H. G. Denham, Professor of Chemistry at Canterbury College, was granted leave of absence for the 1936 session of the College by the College Council yesterday. Dr Denham will visit Great Britain. Mr A. L. M. Perry, of the staff of the Christchurch Boys’ High School, was granted leave of absence for a period of two years from September 17, at a meeting of the Canterbury College Council yesterday afternoon. The recommendation was made by the High Schools and Hostel Committee. Dr H. D. Broadhead, lecturer in Classics at Canterbury College, was granted leave of absence for the third term this year and the first term next year, by the College Council yesterday Dr Broadhead will undertake study and research in England and on the Continent. The High Schools and Hostel Committee reported to the meeting of the Canterbury College Council yesterday that the resignation of Mr W. F. Monk, is president of Rolleston House, had been accepted with regret. Mr Monk will leave shortly-for England to take up his Rhodes Scholarship. The resignation of Mr G. A. H * Kelson as holder of the Charles Cook Warwick House Memorial Scholarship was accepted at a meeting of the Can terbury College Council yesterday. It was reported by the College Committee that Mr Ilelson had been appointed to a temporary position at the Auckland University College. Colonel F. W. W. Dawson, assistant Medical Officer for Health in Canterbury, has been advised that he is being transferred to Hamilton to organise and take charge of the new health district of Waikato. This formerly was part of the Auckland district. Colonel Dawson will probably leave Christchurch at the end of July. The Rev Father A. L. Burger, S.M , M.A., left last evening for Auckland, where he will leave in the Akaroa on June 28 on the first stage of his visit to Rome. Father Burger, who is rector of St Bede’s College, was met yesterday afternoon by the pupils and presented with a travelling rug. There was a large attendance of old boys of the college and members of the staff at the railway station last evening to say farewell. Appreciative references to the work of Messrs J. M. Caffin, H. A. Gilbert and W. E. Parrott, who are leaving Christchurch to take up journalistic work in other centres, were passed at the meeting of the Canterbury Rugby League last evening. Presentations were made to Messrs Gilbert and Parrott, who were present. The code owed more to the newspapers than to the officials for the progress of the game, said the chairman (Mr W. S. E. Moyle).
