“ THE PAINTED VEIL.”
Greta Garbo and Herbert Marshall Co-starred. Greta Garbo returns to delight her many admirers in “ The Painted Yeil,” which heads the current programme at the Regent Theatre. It is a picture that allows the star to reach the high standard of acting that has character ised her recent performances. The story is an adaptation of W. Somerset Maugham’s popular novel. This author has made a study of the East, and there is a considerable amount of Oriental atmosphere in “ The Painted Veil.” This feature of the picture is ideal for Greta Garbo’s unique acting qualities: indeed, it might be said that in “ The Painted Veil ” she is more suitably cast than she was in “ Queen Christina.” Greta Garbo’s leading man is Herbert Marshall. who. as Dr Fane, contributes one of his best performances. The other members of the cast are Warner Oland, who gives a perfect characterisation of General Yu, George Brent and Jean Ilersholt. Firstfdass “ shorts ” complete a good programme. They include a Fox News. “ The Old Pioneer.” a musical cartoon in-colour, and “Casting for Luck,” a real camera thrill.
