Mr E. A. Gibson, aerodrome engineer to the Public Works Department, left for the south yesterday. Mr H. G. Livingstone, a member of the New Zealand Broadcasting Board, returned to Christchurch from -Wellington yesterday. The period of command of Lieuten-ant-Colonel S. D. Mason, of the Canterbury Regiment, has been extended to May 8, 1936. Mr M. J. Savage, Leader of the Opposition, will arrive in Christchurch on July 2 to open the Labour campaign for the Lyttelton by-election. Flight-Lieutenant V. J. SomersetThomas returned from the West Coast yesterday. He has been attending the inquiry into the aeroplane crash at Waiho. Colonel S. C. P. Xicholls, O.C. Southern Command, will leave Christchurch to-morrow to conduct his annual inspection in the MarlboroughXelson district. Guests at the New City Hotel include Messrs J. Tollock and C. Fisk (Wellington), R. Duncan, A. R. Sinclair, S. J. McCausland and W. Walker (Dunedin). Mr R. W. Trotter, who has been president of the South Island Sheep-dog Trials Association since its inception five years ago, has announced his retirement from the office. Mr W. E. Leadlev returned yesterday morning from Wellington, where he had attended the annual conference of the New Zealand Returned Soldiers’ Association*. Mr R. A. Johnson has arrived at Gisborne from Timaru to join the staff of the Union Steam Ship Company there, relieving Mr J. Crawford-Smith, who left on Saturday on a visit to Canada and U.S.A. Major Goifin, of the Salvation Army, who has nearly completed three years’ service in Napier, has been promoted to Wellington, where he has been appointed Dominion inspector of bands and songsters. Mr M. J. Gresson. of Christchurch, has received cabled advice that his son, Mr T. A. Gresson. who is at Caius College, Cambridge, has passed the final Law Tripos with second-class honours. He will sit his Bar Final in September, and hopes to sail from England on return to New Zealand in November. Colonel 11. C. Hurst. D. 5.0., Y.D., has relinquished command of the 3rd New Zealand Mounted Rifles Brigade, and has been transferred to the reserve of officers. Lieutenant-Colonel G. R. Mitchell, D. 5.0., Y.D., has been appointed commander of the Brigade, with the rank of colonel. Mr R. J. Macdonald, chairman of the North Island Sheep-dog Trials Association, who was judge at the South Island championship meeting at Springfield, accompanied by Mr G. Holden, president of the North Island Association. and Mr W. Cuthbertson. secretary, left for the north on Saturday. At a meeting of the Opawa Croquet Club’s committee a motion of sympathy was passed with Mr E. G. Rawnsley in his illness. The club since its inception owes a good deal of its success to the untiring efforts and support of Mr Rawnsley. He has held the office of club captain for the past seyen years and a short time ago was unanimously elected a life member of the club. Mr J. M. Caffin, who left Christchurch on Saturday evening to take up a position on the reporting staff of the "Evening Post,” Wellington, was farewelled by his colleagues on the “ Christchurch Times ” and “ Christchurch Star” on Saturdaj'. In presenting Mr Caffin with a framed photograph of the staff, the editor of the "Star,” Mr A. Burns, wished him every success in his new sphere.
