WHEELBARROW RACE.
Proposed Contest May Help i^orkless. The wheelbarrow race from Ashburton to Christchurch, when Messrs W. J. Walter and W. P. Spencer will take part in a contest similar to that organised in Australia recently, was the subject of a discussion by members of the Christchurch Unemployment Committee this morning. Mr W. W. Scarff said he thought the contest might be of great help to the relief workers. He would like to have tents erected at suitable stopping places along the route, and he thought quite a number of people might pay to see the contestants while they were resting. Mr W. E. Leadley: I would like to see it made a race with the Mayor (Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P.), wheeling Councillor M. E. Lyons from Ashburton. Other suggestions for means of exploiting the race for relief of unemplovment were propounded. When the chairman (Mr E. 11. Andrews) suggested that the committee should begin its ordinary business Mr Scarff replied: “You’re making this a laughing matter. lam not.”
