“BEWARE OF WIDOWS.”
Nellie Bramley Presents Delightful Farce. The popular Nellie Bramley Comedy’ Company is presenting “Beware of Widows” at the St James Theatre. Nellie Bramley must be acclaimed as the queen of comedy. Mirth wells and bubbles from her naturally. It would be hard to imagine her without a smile, or with no quaint turn of wit to make a thing of laughter out of what would sound quite ordinary from less gifted persons. Experience has added to her understanding without detracting from her freshness, and Christchurch may well be pleased that she is back here again with an extensive repertoire. “ Beware oi Widows ” is an excellent choice for the opening of the season. The play, by the same author as “ Fair and Warmer,” which had such a success when Nellie Bramley was in Christchurch last, is well conceived and brilliantly developed, with a wealth of situation embellished with delightfully funny dialogue. It is broad farce in the best sense, with turns and twists to an amusing plot, and a humour that is generous without falling to slapstick level. “Beware of Widows” will conclude with the performance on Friday night, and on Saturday, beginning at the matinee, the management will present the second comedy-drama, entitled “Scandalmongers,” when Nellie Bramley will be seen in another of her famous roles.- Box plan at the D.1.C., day sales at Knight’s Milk Bar. No extra charge is made for booking.
