Sense of Locality.

Nature Notes.

By

James Drummond. F.L.S.. F.Z.S.

MEN' who were engaged to kill king penguins for the oil-pots on Macquarrie Island found that the birds display an unerring sense of locality in their sea voyage to the island, where they nest and rear their young. More than this, they arrive at the landing-place on time, the date varying not more than about a week. The same punctuality is observed in setting out from the island on the annual migration. On leaving the island, the men sometimes took a few penguins on board for old acquaintance sake. When the steamer was about a hundred miles from the island the penguins were dropped overboard. The chart showed that the penguins, on setting out for their island, always lay true to the right course.
