Disgraceful State

R.S.A. Club Rooms In Bad Order. 'J'HAT THE CLUB ROOMS of the Christchurch Returned Soldiers’ Association, in Gloucester Street, are in a disgraceful state of disrepair and “ shrieking for improvement,” is the opinion of the executive of the association which decided last night to allocate £8 monthly for general renovation work Moving that this sum should be made available, Mr T. L. Drummond said that the whole of the interior was drab, dull, unattractive and shrieking for alteration. For the subscription paid by members who used the club for social purposes, no return was given. There was enough labour available to clean out the whole of the premises once a fortnight. “ I want to see this place made bright and cheery,” said Mr Drummond. “ I can assure Mr Drummond of my heartiest co-operation in anything that is done,” said Mr A. L. Emerson, chairman of the house committee. Some revenue from the Jellicoe Ilall could be earmarked for expenditure on the club premises, said Mr J. S. Chisholm. The house committee should be given more latitude by the executive. A reasonable policy of improvement might be gone into by that committee. A similar amount should be given by the association’s employment bureau as a subsidy, said Mr D* mrnond. “We could spend £4O in one hit right now,” said Mr C. Chisnall, "£8 a month will not cover it. Go into any other club and see the difference. Probably it is because there are some members of this association who do not know how to treat the premises.” “ It is quite evident that sooner or later a good deal of money will have to be spent on the place,” said Mr W. H, Darby. Members using the rooms were entitled to some comfort, he added. An amendment that the matter be referred to the house committee was lost and the motion was carried. Mr A. W. Mewton (treasurer) then gave notice to move that a reasonable percentage of the turnover, apart from salaries, be made a charge against the No. 2 account for administration purposes.
