RACING NOTES.

ACCEPTANCES for the first day of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting close at five o’clock to-morrow evening. * s{s Most of the Riccarton trainers who have horses engaged at the Dunedin meeting will go south on Thursday. * * * * Rebel Chief went north last night to compete at the Auckland meeting. * * * ❖ The jumping rider, R. Drinkwater, has made arrangements to reside at Riccarton for the winter months. lie won the Grand National Hurdles on Huntique last August. * s}: sje s£ Friday Night has returned to his old place in F*. Christmas’s stable. It is hoped the spell will enable him to stand a preparation for racing. * * * 5? West Tor scored his third win on end in the chief event at the Dannevirke meeting on Saturday. HACKS AND HUNTERS. The Pareora Steeplechase, at the June meeting of the South Canterbury Jockey Club, will be restricted to hacks and hunters. The Racing Conference refused permission to make it an open race, acting under a rule which states that, unless the president, acting on the recommendation of the District Committee, otherwise approves, the programme'for ever}- meeting held between May 1 and 31. shall include at least one maiden or hack or hunters; or hack and hunters’ steeplechase. :Jc sje* Free Air is given credit for a good performance when she ran third in the King Country Steeplechase, at the Te Kuiti meeting last week. BRIGHT PROSPECTS. The victory gained by King Rev in the President’s Handicap at Te Rapa on Thursday was full of merit, as he won his race at the right end. The Racefui gelding has earned a 71b penalty in the Cornwall Handicap, to be run at Ellerslie next Mondav weel. bringing his weight up to 7.10. It is only 31b more than he won with at Te Rapa, and despite the fact that he will be meeting more formidable opposition in the mile and a quarter race at Ellerslie. his prospects appear exceptionally bright. King Rev is one of the most improved gallopers seen out this season, and he will not lack support in any race that he contests at the Great Northern meeting. * * * * Steeton has gone out for a spell. The Sputhiand mare woo a race at Wingatui in the spring, as a preliminary to her runaway victory in the New Zealand Cup, but she has run disappointingly since then. TAKAKUAS FORM The Wairarapa owner, Mr J. Jamieson, has good reason to rejoice over his action in giving Takakua an opportunity to win honours in Australia, for the Royal Divorce gelding has scored five victories, the Warmamlwol Cup, of £3OO, and the Bay view Handicap, of £4OO, being included in his winning record. Takakua is out of Outlet, a daughter of Provocation, son of Birkenhead. * The South Canterbury* Jumper. Rasuli, who is engaged at the Auckland meeting, went north last night. AN IMPROVER. Gainsfid is a horse of surprises, and he was nearly an upsetting factor in the chief event at the Dannevirke meeting on Saturday. He was the one runner to make any attempt to speed up the contest, and he therefore deserved the share of stake he gained Walton Park is never suited by a slow pace, and, in addition, he was ridden poorly over the final portion, being quite unnecessarily moved from the rail right over to near the outside of the course. Full Throttle weakened at the finish and Walton Park beat him by half a head for third, two lengths behind Gainsfid. Sunny Sky was a length away last. THESPIS. Since racing at Avondale Thespis has been getting through a solid preparation and has also been schooled on several occasions. He has forfeited his engagement in the Great Northern Hardies, which indicates that the big steeplechase will be his mission, and with 10.5 he is a possibility in that event. At his last start over country he accounted for the Mangere Steeplechase in very easy fashion, but the class on that occasion was weak, and he will be meeting much stronger opposition next month. There is no doubt about this horse’s jumping abilitv but there is some doubt as to whether he will see out a solidly run three and three-quarter miles. So far Thespis has not proved partial to heavy going, but nevertheless he cannot be left out of calculations in the big steeplechase, as D. J. Burgess has him in the right order to reproduce his best form. RACING FIXTURES. June 1, 3—Otaki-Maori R.C. June 1,3, 4—Dunedin J.C. June 3, 5. B—Auckland J.C. June B—Foxton R.C.
