OBITUARY.

Archdeacon J. R. Dart of Nelson. Per Press Association. NELSON, This Day. | The death has occurred of the Venerable Archdeacon J. R. Dart, who j had been associated with the Nelson diocese for over fifty years, first as lay secretary. lie was ordained in 1894. and served as a young man on the West Coast, where among old residents and their descendants his name is still held in high esteem, especially for his splendid work at the Brunner mine disaster in 1895. He became clerical secretary of the synod, an office he held to the time of his retirement in 1931. In 1913 he became Vicar of Wakefield and on the formation of the Cathedral Chapter in 1916, he became one of the first canons. During the war he carried on the i duties of diocesan secretary, in addition |to the work of the parish. He was I appointed Vicar of All Saints’, Nelson, j in 1925, and Archdeacon of Waimea a i year later. Among the many offices which he held were the vicar-general commissary of the diocese, registrar of the diocese, member of the. standing committee of the Diocesan Trust Board, chair man of St. Andrew’s Orphanage, and clerical secretary of the New Zealand Church Missionary Society. His work among the sick in hospitals will long be remembered. lie was regarded as one of the most versatile and useful men in the diocese. Archdeacon Dart leaves a widow and two sons, Mr C. W. R. Dart (Geelong), and Mr G. F. J. Dart, of Nelson. Charles James Knight. The death occurred suddenly last week of Mr Charles James Knight, of Templeton. Mr Knight was born in : County Warwick. He joined the 4th i Hussars, and later came to New Zea- : land where he joined the N.Z. Perman- | ent Artillery. Several years later, in ! 1890. he was transferred to the prison ! service and attained the position of superintendent of Paparua Prison. 11 is wife died five years ago. Mr Knight is survived by a son. Mr C. Knight, of Templeton, and a daughter, Mrs Wallace, of Auckland. . One son was killed in the Great War. Mr Knight took a keen interest in the welfare of the district. Recently he retired from the domain committee, of which he was a member for ten years. He was secretary of the Templeton Croquet Club for a similar period and occupied that position up till the time ■of his death. lie also took an interest i in the Templeton Public Library, and 1 ! was an active and keen member of the i Hornby Bowling Club, j The funeral service was conducted by , the Rev 11. Jones at the Templeton Anglican Cemetery. The pall-bearers were warders of the Papaura Prison. ’ 1 Relatives, friends and representatives • of various public departments attended 1 the funeral, and many beautiful wearths were sent.
