KING’S JUBILEE.

Parade and Church Service in City. A CHAIN OF BONFIRES. A chain of bonfires throughout the Dominion, thanksgiving services, parades of troops, and entertainments for school children, will mark the celebration of the Silver Jubilee of the accession to the throne of King George V. on May 6. Christchurch will observe the day as a general holiday. All retail establishments such as * grocers, butchers, drapers, boot retailers, booksellers, radio dealers and hardware merchants, and also all warehouses and wholesale establishments will be *fclosed. In the case of factories, where essential or urgent work is on hand or the majority of the employees wish to work, such establishments will probably remain open. Lawyers, accountants, sharebrokers and the banks have decided to close, and May 6 will be observed as a full holiday by schools and Government departments. It is expected that local bodies will follow the example of the Christchurch City Council in observing the holiday. The Canterbury Master Bakers’ Association has decided to observe a half holiday, and there will be no delivery on Monday afternoon. The shops of tobacconists and hairdressers will also close at noon.

The celebrations in the city will begin with a parade and march past of all units of the Territorial Force stationed in Christchurch and one squadron of the Canterbury Yeomanry Cavalry. The troops will parade in North Hagley Park at 10.15 a.m. A feature of the parade will be a fly past of a flight of machines of the New Zealand Territorial Air Force, and the presentation of Jubilee medals to recipients by the Mayor of Christchurch.

After the parade, a service will be held in the park at eleven o’clock. The Mayor will preside, and the address will be given by Bishop West-Watson. Prayers will be read by Dean Julius and the Rev D. Gardner Miller, while Scripture lessons will be read by the Revs T. W. Armour and C. Eaton. Hymn music will he played by the Salvation Army Band. In the event of bad weather services will be held at the Anglican Cathedral and the Durham Street Methodist Church. Advice to this effect will be broadcast from 3YA..

Promptly at 7.30 in the evening a series of bonfires will be lit in a chain extending down both islands by Boy. Scouts throughout New Zealand. In Christchurch the bonfires will be lit in North Hagley Park and on the Port Hills above the Bridle Path. Packhorses will carry taF, timber and other materials for the Port Hills fire, working from the Lyttelton side. A fire will be built which will burn for some hours, and at the same time an attempt will be made, at both fires, to set off ships’ rockets. The rockets will be sent aloft first on the hill, and answering rockets will go up from Hagley Park. At the fire in the park a message will be read out from the Dominion Chief Commissioner, Dr P. Clennell Fenwick, by Major J. W. Crampton (Metropolitan Commissioner). Commissioner F. Fever will be the campfire chief. The public are invited to the campfire evening, which will include songs and items and appropriate camp-fire entertainments.
