GREAT ACHIEVEMENT

C. J. Oliver Heads Averages for Batsmen. FIVE CENTURIES SCORED. The averages for first-grade cricket for the 1934-35 season make interesting matter for perusal. The outstanding fact is that C. J. Oliver, who heads the averages for batsmen with 81; made the surprising total of 972 runs in the season, the greatest aggregate for many years. His runs included five centuries, another record. No fewer than twenty-eight centuries were scored during the season, and the figures indicate a definite batting superiority, which may be accounted for less bv the strength of the batting, which is considerable, than by the weakness of the bowling. Strangely enough, I. B. Cromb, of Lancaster Park, heads the bowling with an average of thirteen for twenty-one wickets. because Cromb did not bowl at all till the middle of the season on account of a recent operation, and then changed from his usual medium pace to slow twisters. I-Ie bowled himself with jtulgnient, however, and was a big factor in the attack of his side. The veteran, R. J. Read, captured most wickets, getting 48 at an average of 16.6, while the consistent Roberts came out with 34 at an average of 13.5. Centuries were scored by the following batsmen:—C. J. Oliver, of Sydenham: 145 v. Old Collegians. 141 v. West, 147 v. East, 153 v. St Albans, and 162 v. West. I. B. Cromb. of Lancaster Park: 222 v. St Albans, 176 v. West and 114 v. St Albans. J. Jacobs, of Riccarton; 114 v. East and 118 v. Sydenham. G. H. Stringer, of Riccarton: 101 v. West and 139 v. East. A. P. Cobden, of Lancaster Park; 136 v. Old Col? eg inns and 132 v. East. J. W. WOMEN’S MATCHES. Mai Moa Win Knock-out Semi-final. The semi-finals of the senior and junior knock-out competitions organised by tlie Canterbury Ladles’ Cricket Association were decided at Malvern Park on Saturday, and although end-of-season indifference was generaly apparent, some bright individual performances were recorded. Noteworthy was the batting of V. Belworthy the Mai Moa captain. who rattled on 36 runs in good time before being trapped by a smart

throw-ln from the field. P. Blackler tMai Moa) and B. Fellowes (Spreydon) were successful bowlers. The two semi-finals, between Mai Moa and Spreydon in the senior, and Mai Moa and Sumner in the Junior grade, were the only matches played. Mai Moas defeat of Spreydon was anticipated. but a closer game can be expected next week, when Mai Moa and Beckenham will contest the final. Beckenham, who had the bye on Saturday, last week eliminated Technical Old Girls, this season’s championship winners. Mai Moa juniors decisively defeated Sumner, and will meet Tohe A in the junior final. Scores:— Senior. Mai Moa, 86 (V. Belworthy 36; B. Fellowes three for 33, E. Wormald two for 15 E.
