UNPAID FIREMEN.
Criticism of Duke’s Tour Request. Criticism of the Government for asking that firemen should work extra time without pay during the visit of the Duke of Gloucester was voiced this morning by Superintendent C. C. Warner, of Christchurch, speaking a-t the annual conference of the Fire Engineers’ Institute. “It was rather shabby,” he said. “ The Government said it did not have much money for the tour expenses, yet it paid for a couple of dozen hangers-on to travel through New Zealand with the Duke. The poor firemen were not paid. “ The fire risk was increased enormously by the Duke’s tour, and the firemen did a very valuable work. One thing that I did think ridiculous, however, was the insistence that firemen—unpaid, mind you—should walk up and down outside the Duke’s room wherever he stayed. “ Other paid officials were quite capable of looking out for fire. Then the firemen would have done their duty,” he concluded.
