Coaching Value.

Rushed Athletic Tours Deprecated. (Special vo the “Star.”) AUCKLAND. February 18. -DEAL BENEFIT to athletics apart from the flash of quickened public interest is not gained by the system of having champions make a day’s appearance in one place and then rush awhy to another. This view was expressed by Captain Evan Hunter to a gathering of local athletes and enthusiasts who entertained the British visiting athletes and the two Finns at the Station Hotel on Saturday evening. Mr J P. Kalaugher, who presided, presented each of the visitors with a Maori carved box as a memento of the visit. Captain Hunter, himself an ex-athlete of repute, and manager of the visiting team, stated that all the party were delighted with the country and scenery, and with the hospitality extended to them. They regretted, however, that the trip was made in such a rush, and he suggested that, in planning future tours of the kind, provision be made for a stay of a week in each city or centre to enable the visitors to do some coaching among local athletes, and thus help athletics generally in New Zealand.
