FALL OVER CLIFF.

Relief Worker Lost His Footing. ACCIDENT AT SUMNER. Head injuries, concussion and a fractured left arm were suffered by Mr J. Hines, a relief worker, of Main Road, Redcliffs, who fell over a cliff while working at ‘‘The Cutting” yesterday afternoon. Mr Hines was picked up in a semi-conscious condition and after receiving treatment from Dr R. F. Bakewell, of Sumner, he was taken to the Christchurch Public Hospital. His condition is reported to be satisfactory. At the time of the accident Mr Hines was working on the face of the cliff near the top. He was working with a crow-bar and when endeavouring to wrench out rock he lost his footing and fell. He slipped through the emergency rope by which he was suspended from the top of the cliff and after several outcrops of rock had helped to break his fall, landed on his back at the foot of the cliff. For some time past Mr Hines has been engaged by the Sumner Borough Council on this class of work. Cut on Leg. William Smith, aged three years, of Tancred Street, received a serious cut on the leg when he fell from a tree yesterday. He was taken to the hospital by the St John Ambulance. Woman Knocked Down. Mrs Mercer, Clarence Road, received a cut on the arm and head injuries when she was knocked down by a bicycle at the intersection of Lichfield and Manchester Streets yesterday afternoon. She was taken to her home by the St John Ambulance.
