ON ’CHANGE.

EXCHANGE RATES.

Investment Stock Quiet. * MINING ACTIVE. UNITED BUILDING SOCIETY AT PEAK BATE. Markets generally were quiet in the investment sections this morning, prices continuing to fluctuate, with a further easing tendency. Recent buyers have been inclined to hold off through fear of further depreciation, though it would appear that present low levels should be temporary only, and any further fluctuation should be confined within narrow limits. Government 1949 stock changed hands at yesterday’s level, with further buyers and no sellers. The section was quiet, a few unsupported buyers putting in bids at late rates. Among the banks buyers for Commercial of Sydney raised their bids substantially to £l6, sellers staying at yesterday’s rate, 2s 6d above. National of Australasia (£5 paid) looked fractionally easier; and National of New Zealand were weak, the market closing between 67s and 69s 6d. New Zealand and Reserve were still on offer at relatively low levels and seemed uncertain. In tha Loan and Agency section Goldsbrough Mort firmed to buyers at 28s 4d and sellers at 295; while United Building Society sold at %the peak level of 22s 3d, with further unsatisfied buyers at that figure, sellers 6d above. The only issue to have dealings among breweries was Staples, which in reported business lost Is 9d in their first sale this month. Miscellaneous issues showed continued weakness in Australian scrip, Anthony Hordern being on offer at 17s 6d; Broken Hill Proprietary at 50s; Dunlop Perdriau Rubber at 18s fid; and Associated Newspapers at 22s 6d. Beath and Co. sellers set their limits at 32s 9d, buyers being well back at 295. New Zealand Drug Company were firmer on selling limits of 81s. Since the publication of the liquidator’s report, Quill Morris have had wide quotations, buyers remaining at late rates and sellers retiring to high levels. The market this morning closed from 4s to 5s 5d without business being recorded.

(Special to the “Star.”) AUCKLAND, This Day. Business on ’Change continues rather quiet, but with values fairly steady. At this morning’s call banks were decidedly dull with very few buyers in evidence and the same remark applies to insurances, in which Standard are still in de-mand-at 71s, with no sellers. Sellers of New Zealand dropped lfmits to 67s 9d, bringing in a buyer at 655. South British were offered lower at 9 7s. Farmers’ Auctioneering shares have a steady market, and at the Vast call yesterday, "B” prefs. sold at 21s 9d, a rise of Is 3d and the last sale. Auckland Gas shares are firm, and after fresh business at 27s 6d, the market rested between 27s 3d and 27s 9d. Waihi were very firm with morning quotations between 40s and 4ls. Government stocks showed little change. -ONDON STOCK EXCHANGE United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. (Received February 19. 12.30 p.m.) LONDON, February 18. Mount Lyell, 13s 6d.
