LICENSING BREACHES.

Hotel Proprietor and Barman Fined. (SDeclal to th« "Star.") AUCKLAND, This Day. The licensee of the Royal Hotel, John Reilly, was charged on summons in the Police Court yesterday with selling liquor after hours on January 7. His son, William Reilly, barman, was charged with supplying liquor to persons not entitled to be supplied. Mr G. P. Finlay represented both defendants, who pleaded guilty. Senior-Sergeant Flanagan said that at 9.15 on the night of January 7, Sergeants Jones and Tocher found six men in the bar. John Reilly, the licensee, was in bed, while his wife was out at a party. William Reilly was serving in the bar. The licensee was fined £lO on a similar charge last year, so the matter would now have to be reported to the Licensing Committee. ‘‘The barman seems to have been an irresponsible sort of person,” said the Magistrate, Mr F. K. Hunt. Mr Finlay: A little indiscreet perhaps. There was a big bowling tournament in progress in Auckland at the time and the Royal Hotel was full of bowlers who were staying there. The barman opened the door of the bar to let one or two bowlers in, and at the same time a few outsiders got in. Some of these men since assert that they were invited by bowler friends. However they pulled the wool over the eyes of the unfortunate barman. Mr F *J la t y sai d that Reilly, sen., was an e I rr \ an w h° retired every night shortly after dinner. Mrs Reilly was re ~] y r?® manager of the property. The Magistrate -aid he could appreciate the diffio’ y when the hotel was full of bowlers. The licensee and barman would each be fined £5 and costs. . Now that there have been two convictions within six months the Licensing Committee will have to deal with the matter.” he added.
