A PIGEON IN PERIL.

The owner of a park near Lille, in France, was walking one day in his grounds when he was suddenly surrounded by four pigeons, which, skimming closely around him, brushing him with their wings in their rapid flight, drove or guided him towards a pool. Arriving there, one of the pigeons separated itself from its companions and alighted on a boat, keeping its eyes earnestly fixed upon the puzzled man. He, not understanding the mute language of the birds, turned to pursue his way homeward; whereupon the pigeon cast itself into the water and, emerging, began once more to fly round and round the landowner, the other three again joining in this whirling flight with appearance of distress. The man returned toward the pool and, to his great amazement, perceived a drowning pigeon. He immediately drew it from the water, and then only, having seen their companion in safety, did the other four resume their flight, soon disappearing. The rescued bird was a carrier pigeon which bore the proofs of this upon the rings around its legs. PENFRIENDS WANTED. GWYN GILMER (11-12 years), Clifford Street, Blackball.
