GOOD GOLF.

Roger Wethered Stages “Come Back.” (Special to the " Star.”) LONDON, January 17. The old players of Oxford and Cambridge always open the competitive golf season with their match-play event for the president’s putter. This year there was a big field of strong amateur talent and it was notable for the success of Roger Wethered. In the final he was opposed by A. J. Evans, who played for Oxford nearly a quarter of a century ago and who afterwards captained Kent at cricket, and he won over the 18 holes by 2 and 1. Wethered gave a display typical of his golf for several years. - He played some holes with outstanding brilliance. At others he blundered grievously. The final result was that he completed the Rye course in an average of fours, and this represented a fine performance. In fact, the figures suggest that he would have beaten most opponents. It is remarkable that a golfer of Wethered’s experience cannot cure himself of his waywardness. It is the tee shots which give him the most trouble, and for a period he became so uncertain with these that he was driven to using a cleek. Critics declare that his insistence on the straight left arm has ruined his game, but he has refused to accept the advice which his friends have offered him, and he goes on his way—slicing and pulling. Curiously enough, he has continued as expert as ever with his irons. In fact, there are few golfers in the professional ranks who approach the hole with such skill. It is this knack which has saved him. Without it his game would have gone to pieces. Cyril Tolley also took part in the competition, and played well, getting into the last eight. He has settled down in England again, and I do not think he has any intention ot returning to America.
