OBITUARY.
James Clothier. (Special to the ** Star.”) AUCKLAND, February 15. An early resident of Canterbury, Mr Tames Clothier, died at Hamilton on February 13, aged eighty-five years. Born in Somerset, England, he came to New Zealand with his parents, who landed at Lyttelton in 1850, when he was nine months old. The family took up land in Canterbury, and for many years Mr J. Clothier was farming ‘at Kaiapoi. He had lived retired for the last twenty-five years at Hamilton, where he was a member of the Whitiora Bowling Club. He is survived by Mrs Clothier and the following children: Mrs A. Tait, of Auckland; Misses M. and K. Clothier and Mr S. Clothier, of Hamilton; and Mr J. Clothier, of Matamata.
Bernard Hall. United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, February 15. The death has occurred of Mr Bernard Hall, Director of the National Gallerv Art Mus'um and Art Schools of Melbourne. He contracted a chill on February 6 during a visit to the country and developed double pneumonia. He was taken to a West End nursing home and gradually sank until his death late last night. His sister-in-law. Miss Thompson, remained beside him to the end.
Born at Liverpool, England, in 1859, Mr Hall was educated at Cheltenham College and studied art at the South Kensington Museum and at the Antwerp and Munich Academies. He contributed illustrations_ to “ The Graphic,” “ Black and White ” and other publications. He received his appointment at Melbourne in 1892, since when he had visited England and made numerous purchases undrr the Felton Bequest. He was twice married; in 1894 to Miss Elsinore Mary Shuter, of Melbourne, by whom he had one son; and in 1912 to Miss Grace H. Thompson, by whom he had two sons and one daughter.
