SUPPLIES LOW.

Extra Water System for Rangiora. DECISION OF COUNCIL. Authority for the engineer (Mr H. H. Matthews) to take the preliminary steps to provide a supplementary water supply for Rangiora was given by the Rangiora Borough Council last night. The District Health Officer (Colonel F. W. W. Dawson) attended the meeting, and informally discussed the proposal in committee. The Town Clerk (Mr J. M. Fraser) reported that the depth of water in the well had fallen to sft sin, leaving only 2ft 2in of water to work on. The level fell two inches yesterday, and if it continued at this rate for another twelve days the pumps would be unable to lift it. He stressed the point that there was no shortage of water, but it was necessary to go further down to reach it, and for this purpose the existing 14in test bore could be used. In a special report, the engineer recommended the use of the small pump at present used on the main well, and placing it down a sunken chamber alongside the 14in bore, which had a depth of about 35ft, and which could probably be deepened. The altered conditions under which the pump would operate would require , a motor of not less than ten horse-power. The pump should then deliver approximately 7000 gallons an hour, which would meet the position for all domestic purposes. The estimated cost, without labour, was £75 10s, made up of motor with starter and drive, £34 10s; piping, fittings and wiring material, £l7 10s; and sunken chamber, with a total depth of 19ft, £23 10s. After a full discussion, the proposals were adopted, and the engineer was authorised to procure certain fittings and have the bore cleaned out immediately. It was agreed that, when this was done, the formation of the sunken chamber should be proceeded with, and the committee called together for the purpose of authorising further work and the purchase of the other equipment. Knocked Down by Cyclist. About 4 p.m. yesterday a pedes trian, Mrs T. H. Watkins, was knocked down at the corner of High and Ashley Streets by some boy cyclists. She was taken to her home in Blackett Street, where she was attended by Dr E. S. M’Phail, who found that she had a broken collar-bone, as well as being badly bruised.
