Interesting Racing at the Kaiapoi Regatta. AKAROA'S maiden fours. A long programme, many extra events being necessitated tnrougn races being rowed in heats, was decided wucii tne Kaiapoi Regatta was held on the north uranuh of the Waimakariri River this afternoon. MKenzie and M. Cullen) beat Cure (P. Wright and K. Thompson) by a canvas). Final: Avon beat Union by a foot. There was little between the crews. Unfon appeared to have a slight advantage over the early stages, but Avon drew level at the quarter-mile, and remained level to within a few yards of the line. . YOUTHS' FOURS—First heat: Union (W. Corliss, T. Harris, K. Sorrell and H. M. Jennings) beat Avon (A. Mahoney, D. M’Leod, L. Morgan and S. G. Jones ) by four lengths. Second heat: Akaroa (K. A. Rhodes, R. J. Phillips, V. Armstrong and K. F. M’Bride) beat Canterbury (H. F. Fwwer, S. M. Gray, W. Stonehouse and R. Carey) by naif a length. Final: Akaroa beat Union by two lengths. This was another great finish, Akaroa winning in the last three strokes. The crews were level practically all the way, but Union had a slight advantage 25 yards from the finish, when Akaroa m*L in a desperate effort to win narrowly. MAIDEN FOURS—First heat: Avon (J. B. M’Guire, R. Thompson, R. Perkins and W. Francis) beat Canterbury (C. Robertson, W. M. Graham. F. T. Cox and M. Watts) by half a length. Union also started. Second heat: Akaroa <T. Armstrong, G. Kingston. W. Williamson and F. Harrison) beat Sumner-Red-cliffs (J. Wing, J. Gant, A. Grafton and W. Miles) by three lengths. Final: Akaroa beat Avon by two lengths. Akaroa established an early lead, which they were increasing with every stroke over the last few yards. MAORI CANOE RACE—H. Pitama's crew heat G. Silk’s crew after a spirited exhibition. YOUTHS* DOUBLE SCULLS—First heat: Akaroa (K. A. Rhodes and R. J. Phillips) 1, Sumner-Redcliffs 2. Won by four lengths. Second heat: Cure (M. Clarke and N. Dempsey) 1, Union 2. Won by four lengths. Third heat: Canterbury (H. Flower and F. M. Gray) 1, Avon 2. Won by half a length. Final—Cure 1. Canterbury 2, Akaroa 3. Won by a length, half a length between second anil third. The crews soon sorted out into this order, which was never changed. Cure won in good style. A late effort on the part of Akaroa, to catch Canterbury, failed narrowly. MAIDEN DOUBLE SCULLS—First heat: Akaroa (E. Kingston and J. Reid) 1 Avon 2. Won by a canvas. Second heat: Union *(E. Vallance and E. R. Faxby) 1. Sumner-Redcllffs 2. Won by a length. Third heat: Canterbury <B. A. Spence and R. J. Hampton) 1, Cure 2. Won by three-quarters of a length. Final —Canterbury 1, Akaroa 2, Union 3. Won by a length, half a canvas between second and third. Canterbury got the lead early and their position was never in danger. Akaroa and Union had a great tussle for second. JUNIOR DOUBLE SCULLS—First heat: Canterbury (M. Hullet and H. S. Read) beat Union by two lengths. Second heat: Cure (R. Beg* and J. L. BurneV) beat Sumner-Redcliffs by six lengths. Third heat: Avon (J. Patterson and L. Hampton) beat Akaroa by a Won by a length and a half, two lengths between second and third. Avon dropped back, leaving Canterbury and Cure to fight out the race. Canterbury took the lead at the outset. but bow had trouble with his swivel, and Cure came away to win convincingly. LIGHT-WEIGHT MAIDEN SCULLS —First heat: Union (W. E. Hooper and W. Corliss) beat Avon by five lengths. Akaroa also started. Second heat: Cure (H. M’Allister and J. G. O’Connor) beat Sumner-Redcliffs by three lengths. Final—Union beat Cure by three lengths.
