LEADERS OPTIMISTIC.
Question of Recovery of Great Britain. “ Star ” Parliamentary Reporter. W ELLINGTON, This Day. Sir Hugh Denison, chairman of Associated Newspapers, Ltd., Sydney, arrived by the Rangitiki to-day after visiting Great Britain and the Continent. He intends to spend a short holiday in the Dominion. Questioned regarding economic conditions at Home Sir Hugh said the position there was very similar to that existing in New Zealand and Australia Leaders in public life were optimistic. He considered that England would come out of the depression, but the time of recovery was governed to a certain extent by foreign conditions. He spoke ot the wonderful progress made by Finland in the pulping of timber for paper making and the artificial silk industry. Most of the pulp for artificial silk went to Japan. Sir Hugh said that he had proposed visiting Russia, but had been dissuaded from doing so, as. owing to the attitude of the authorities visitors saw only what the official guides were prepared to show.
