HAWKE CUP CRICKET.
Marlborough Commence Game With Manawatu. Per Press Association. PALMERSTON NORTH, This Day. Though a few showers of rain fell during the night, there was not sufficient to affect the wicket for the Hawke Cup challenge match between Manawatu and Marlborough, which was commenced at the sports ground in dull weather this morning. The visitors having defeated Nelson in the elimination series, won the right to play for the trophy. Marlborough won the toss to take first use of the wicket, and opened with M. Neal and A. Barratt. Neal has played representative cricket for the southern province for 26 years. R. Hatch and Murchison carried the attack of Manawatu, but the batsmen played the bowling steadily, though runs came slowly. Barratt had a life when Neal declined to run. With the bats- j man well out of the crease, however, a j wild return to the 'keeper saw the j wicket remain intact, whereas it should have fallen. After fifty-five minutes, 30 1 runs appeared on the board. 1
