Slight Increase Shown Last Year. INTERESTING FIGURES. The population of New Zealand, its dependencies and mandated territory at December 31, 1934. as estimated by the Government Statistician, was 1,627,059. That of New Zealand alone was 1,557,070. including Maoris, an increase of 11,145 over the total for 1933, which was 12.216 greater than that for 1932. The figures compiled by the Government Statistician and published in the current Gazette show that the population of New Zealand proper was made up of 793.547 males and 763,523 females. The population of Western Samoa totalled 52,946, of the Cook Islands, Niue, etc., 15,864, and of the Tokelau Islands 1179. The • population of New Zealand proper included 1,482,936 Europeans and 74,134 Maoris. The North Island claimed 1,005,702, of whom 70,938 .were Maoris, and the South Island 551,368, including 3196 Maoris.
