LAWN TENNIS.

Ewin and Kay Give Display at Nelson. GOOD FORM REVEALED. (Special to the "Star.") NELSON, This Day. Tennis of a high standard was seen at Nelson yesterday afternoon, when the touring Victorians, A. A. Kay and R. W. Ewin, played exhibition matches under the auspices of the Nelson Hawn Tennis Association. There was a large attendance of the public, which thoroughly enjoyed the spectacular fare provided by the visitors. In the principal match on the programme, Ewin again defeated Kay, this time 1-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3, his stroking and severity ofE the ground bringing back memories of the visit of Adrian Quist and Don Turnbull in 11#33. Kay took the first set easily, Ewin being slow to settle down. Attacking the backhand, Kwin found the vulnerable point in Kay s armour and, with frequent excursions to the net, gradually assumed control of the game. The third set produced spectacular driving exchanges which invariably ended in favour of Ewin, whose beautiful stroke play drew from the gallery frequent rounds' of applause. Kay tired visibly in the fourth and final set, in which Ewin looked a winner all the way. The latter’s much wanted first service seldom came off, but when it did Kay was helpless, failing even to get his racquet on to the ball. Interviewed, Kay said that the match court at Wilding Park was the best in New Zealand or Australia, while the surface of the special cot*rt prepared by the Nelson Association was as good, if not better, than any in Australia. Commenting on the South Island tour, Ewin said they were glad of the opportunity to meet Angas, Dymond and Pearce. The first-named was not producing his old-time form, which they attributed td lack of plav in big matches. In Lucas and Williamson. Nelson had players better than Pearce, the Otago champion. In the first match of the afternoon, Kay defeated R. A. Lucas, 6-1, 6-3. The game was more even than the scores indicate, Lucas having bad lt«ck in just netting or overshooting’ the lines on important points.

Kwin defeated Williamson, 6-1, 6-3, in a game that was marked by the fast driving of the Australian. The Nelson player frequently made saves oft seemingly impossible shots, but was somewhat awed by the importance of the occasion, especially in the first set. The Australians leave to-day on their return to Australia. Ashburton Matches. (Special to the •• Star.'*) ASHBURTON, February 14. At a meeting of the committee of the Mid-Canterbury I.awn Tennis Sub-Asso-ciation (Mr D. Lawson presiding), a report was received from a meeting of tlie Hinds, Willowby and Eiflfelton Clubs, as a result of which the Hinds Club had decided to affiliate to the sub-associa-tion. The affiliation was accepted, and It was decided to hold a country players’ tournament next year. Arrangements were made for the Cola Cup competition to be held on March y and 23, entries to close on March 2. Permission was granted to the Ashburton Club to play matches against Wai-iti (Timaru) and United (Christchurch) on March 2 and 9. provided it fielded a strong intermediate team for its engagements on both dates. A request for a representative match against North Canterbury and Rangiora was held over until details have been received from Ellesmere and Malvern. Mr H. Hawkins (Eiffelton) stressed the advisability of promoting tennis in primary and secondary schools. While the association’s finances are limited, the committee expressed Its hearty approval of this suggestion, and the hope that some action could be taken in the near future.
