KINDERGARTEN WORK.

Meeting of Association Held. GARDEN* PARTY, ARRANGED. The Christchurch Free Kindergarten Association met .on Wednesday in the Y.M.C.A. rooms, Mrs H. Thacker presiding. present were: Mesdames Reeby,. Pev-erill, Powell, Grigg. Williamson, Evans, Hadfield, Hitchcock, Aitken, Hester. Drayton, Dunbier, Manchester, Stuart, Wyatt, Powell, Retallick, Bishop and the secretary. A challenge was received from the Wellington Free Kindergarten Council to race it with a penny trail across Cook Strait between Wellington and Christchurch, a distance of eightyseven miles. The race would commence on February IS and definitely close on March 31. Each association would retain the amount it raised. Mrs Thacker congratulated each of the local committees on what they had already accomplished. It was reported that a jumble sale would be held to-day in the Hibernian Hall. Garden Party. For many years Mr and Mrs Keith Hadfield have annually entertained members of the association at a garden party. This year it will be in aid ot the race fund and it will be held on Saturdav afternoon. March 2. The Selwvn Committee will be in charge of a shilling stall; Sydenham and Linwood will serve afternoon tea; Phillipstown and New Brighton will take charge ot the cake stall. Miss Whitcombe’s offer to bake for this stall was accepted with thanks.. The teachers and students are working for a lavender stall. A parcel of useful remnants from Hay’s, Ltd., was received with thanks. The Sunbeam Committee will be in charge or the ice-cream stall. Richmond will sell soft drinks and sweets and will arrange the putting competition. Mrs Cyrix Stringer will be responsible for the tennis and Mr C. Throp will have charge of'the side-shows. Mr Hadfiejd has presented seven pictures, one to each school, to be disposed of for the benefit of the race fund. Following the garden party, there will be a succession of events by the schools. At the end of May next the head teachers will go to Auckland to attend a refresher course, which is being arranged by the Auckland Kindergarten Council. Miss Hull reported that she had visited the schools and was satisfied at the number of new children being enrolled. One new student. Miss B. Andrews, was appointed. Kindergarten Committee. A combined meeting of the committee of the New Brighton Kindergarten and mothers was held in the schoolroom on Tuesday, the convener, Mrs H. A. Bishop, presiding over a good attendance. The convener explained the copper trail competition between Christchurch and Wellington. She also mentioned the jumble sale to be held in the Hibernian Hall to-day and the garden party to be held on Saturday, March 2, at the residence of Mr and Mrs A. K. Hadfield, at which New Brighton would share the cake stall with the Phillipstown branch. Other plans for raising funds for the copper trail were discussed, and it was decided to hold a coin evening on Monday, February 25. Mr A. K. Hadfield has donated a picture as a prize for a competition- The annual meeting will be held early in March. Card Evening. There was a large attendance at the Pier Hall on Wednesday evening, when the New Brighton sub-branch of the R.S.A. held a card evening, followed by a dance. The prize-winners were Mesdames C. Henderson and E. Philpott, Messrs R. T. Day and C. G. Saggers. A competition was won by Mr F. Booth. Music for the dancing was supplied by Mrs Ross-Smith, assisted by Messrs F. Arnold and I. Illing. Messrs R. J. Potter and R. Andrews were M.C.’s. Novelty dances were won by Mrs F. Beale and Mr T. Swaney and Mrs F. Arnold and Miss W. Stevens.
