The reasons why the time service formerly given by the Post and Telegraph Department had been discontinued, said the Director-General, Mr G. M’Namara, in reply to a complaint in Wellington, were chiefly on the grounds of economy, but also because the service had been abused. “It cost the Department the services of five or six girls in cities like Wellington and Auckland,” he said. " When the extent of the service which was given to all centres is considered, the cost was considerable. It may be said that the same service is given in other countries, and that is true, but in every other country it costs from lid to lid per call from the house. The public were largely responsible for the discontirmance of the time service through its abuse. Children were allowed to ring up to amuse themselves. We would be very gla4 to give the service at lid per calk”
