Why Counsel Could Not Proceed. On a shell-torn battlefield in France. Lieutenant Riordan, of the American Expeditionary Force, gave himself up for dead. Gasping from the effects of a German gas attack, he lay writhing in No Man’s Land. Suddenly a sergeant crawled beside him coughing from gas fumes, too He managed to get Riordan's writhing body on to his shoulders and drag him back to the trenches. In the bustle of retreat the couple lost sight of each other. They met again in a New York law court Ex-Sergeant George Stanger was charged with abandoning his wife and child. John Riordan. now a brilliant attorney, rose to make an impassioned speech for the wife. He turned towards the defendant s table and then rushed across the court to grab Stanger's hand. “ I'm sorrv. your Honor, he said to the Judge. “ I cannot proceed against this man. He rendered me a service I can never forget.” Stanger was released from custody on narole.
