TO SAVE A SCHOOL.

Dean Makes Sacrifice in Vain. A dean’s secret sacrifice to save a school lies behind the fact that for the past three years Dr A. V. Baillie, Dean of Windsor, has lived only' in a small wing of his residence at Windsor Castle, the main portion having been shut up. The secret was revealed when it was learned that Dr Baillie has annually been giving hundreds of pounds in a vain effort to save St Stephen's High School, Windsor, from closing its doors, states the “ Daily Mail.” His benefactions are stated to run into several thousands of pounds, and it will probably' be another two years before his commitments enable him to reopen the Deanery' in full. “It was a fine school, with splendid traditions,” Dr Baillie said, “ and I thought it was worth saving. But we can hold out no longer, and at Christmas the school breaks up for the last time.” Miss Porcher. headmistress of St Stephen's for 22 years, who is almost heartbroken at the closing of the school, said that it was really wonderful the sacrifices every'one connected with the school had made. “ We should have closed on several occasions,” she said, “ but for the offers of the staff to accept greatly-reduced wages. “ The school was founded more than 50 years ago and flourished until after the war, having more than 100 boarders. a ar 8 e number of day scholars. 1 hen with the development of • \\ indsor it became enclosed by' build- | i n £ s and the number of boarders gradu- ‘ ally diminished.”
