ADDINGTON YARDS.

Beef Values Advance Slightly. FIRM SALE FOR MUTTON. There was an improved demand for beef at the Addington stock sale yesterday, and values for the best steers and heifers showed an advance of about 10s a head on last week's. Other sorts showed no change. The mutton sale was firm throughout, with little change in values from last week. Many of the ewes were fit only for freezing purposes. Exporters took most of the yarding at full schedule rates. Fat Cattle. The entry of fat cattle totalled 430 head, compared with 475 at the previous market. There was again a preponderance of inferior cow and plain beef. This was difficult to quit. Generally the auction was a little brighter than last week’s for all the best beef, and good steers and heifers advanced 10s a head. There was no change on late rates for any other class. One line of steers came from Southland. The top price for steers was £lO 7s 6d, that figure being paid for six sold on account of J. Carmichael (Edendale). His line of eight averaged £lO Is 6d a jhead—one of the best averages recorded at Addington for some weeks. A line from J. C. Hay (Pigeon Bay) averaged £9 14s a head. The top price for heifers was £9 12s 6d for the pick of a line from W. Craw (Chorlton). They were remarkably fine heifers and attracted much attention. The top price for cows was £7 12s 6d. Best beef sold at from 23s to 25s 6d per 1001 b, good from 19s 6d to 22s 6d; heavy from 37s to 19s; medium 14s to 17s; and rough down to 10s. Values were: Extra prime heavy steers, to £lO 7s 6d. Most of the ewes were fit only for freezing purposes and were taken by export buyers at full schedule rates. Butchers competed keenly for the heavier sorts and values for those classes averaged an advance of Is a head on late rates. The butchers’ demand was irregular. The top price for wethers was 28s Id, paid for four of a line sold on account of R. Manson (Charteris Bay). The top price for ewes was 23s lOd, paid for the pick of a line of seventeen from D. Gillanders (Darfield). Values were:— Extra prime heavy wethers to 28s Id. Prime heavy wethers, 24s 6d to 25s 6d. Prime medium-weight wethers, 21s 6d to 245. Medium quality wethers, 19s to 21s. There was a large entry of vealers. Good quality sorts were rare. As a result, all sorts showing conditions were eagerly bought, but the poorer types were neglected. The top price for the section was £4 4s. Dairy Cattle. With an entry of 66 head in the dairy section, the demand was well sustained. There was a good sprinkling of good quality cows and heifers. The market was £1 to £1 30s a head better than that of last week. Values ranged as follows: Extra good second) and third calvers to £7 ss. Good second and third chlvers £4 10s to £5 15 s. Medium second and third calvers £3 to £4. Others 25s to £2 355. Extra good heifers to £7 12s 6d. Good heifers £5 to £6. Medium heifers £3 10s to £4 10s. Others 30s to £3. Store Cattle. As at the previous market, the store cattle yarding was nondescript. No steers were penned, and 1 there was little animation in the auction. Cows made from 12s 6d to £1 10s. Quotations, however, could be little guide to prospective vendors, as the market was so poorly representative of the best store classes. Tat Pigs. There was a good entry of fat pigs. The demand from all sources was very well sustained throughout a keen auction. All classes showed a slight advance on late rates. Values ranged as follows: Choppers £2 to £3 8s fid. Average price per lb 5Jd to 6d. Store Figs. A medium entry of store pigs met with an erratic sale, the demand being indifferent because of the falling-off in feed. Prices realised were on a par with those at the opening of last week’s sale. Values were:— Weaners 9s 6d* to 12s 6d. Good weaners up to 15s. Slips 11s to 13s 6d. Small stores 14s 6d to 16s.
