THE MAYORALTY.
Who Will Be Official Labour Candidate? Close secrecy is being maintained in Trades Hall circles concerning the position that will arise, assuming that the Mayor (Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P.) is not a candidate for the Mayoralty at the next municipal elections in May. The secretary of the North Canterbury Labour Representation Committee (Mr R. M. Macfarlane) in declining to comment on the position, said that the committee would be meeting next Thursday and the whole position would then fee reviewed. One other nomination has been received for the position, that of the Rev J. K. Archer. Whether he will be the candidate or whether the Mayor should be persuaded to reconsider his decision are questions which the L.R.C. is expected to thresh out at its meeting. Nominations close on January 17 In the event of Mr Sullivan’s refusing to stand, other candidates may be nominated to represent Labour. At the present time the matter is, however, very much in the air.
