Charles William Channaw, aged sixtythree, of Camden Town, an artist, who lost a big city business after his father left him £20,000, was fined 5s at Hampstead for mendicancy. He possessed sixpence, two boxes of matches, and a note from Bernard Shaw scribbled on the back of a sketch which Channaw sent him, and reading: “If you can draw like this, why sell matches?” Channaw was offered £4 for the sketch but he demanded £ls.
