SPORTSMEN’S WELCOME.

Australian Swimmers in Christchurch. The Australian swimmers, Reg Clarke and Harry Tickle, who arrived from the south yesterday afternoon to swim at the Elmwood Club’s carnival in the Tepid Baths to-morrow night, were accorded a “ sportsmen’s welcome ” in the Pioneer Sports Club’s rooms shortly after they reached the city. There was a large attendance of members of various city sports clubs. Mr r. H. Taylor, president of the Pioneer Sports Club, was in the chair. Mr J. Donnelly, president of the Elmwood Club, welcomed the Australians, expressing the hope that their stay in Christchurch would prove enjoyable. In the absence of Mr M. E. Lyons, president of . the Canterbury Centre, Mr V. G. Spiller (secretary) expressed the centre’s pleasure at the visit. He considered that the visits of overseas sending New Zealand performers away. He thought the Elmwood Club was to be thanked .and congratulated for arranging the visit. Kindred Spoi-ts Welcome. Speaking on behalf of kindred sports. Mr S. G. Holland said that they wanted to make the visitors thoroughly at home. Tn endorsing the remarks of previous speakers, Mr Taylor announced that the visitors had been appointed honorary members of the club during their stay. He pointed out that the Christchurch Club rooms had been modelled on the Victoria Amateur Sports Club’s rooms and the New South Wales Sports Club's rooms.

Mr Clarke, in reply, expressed thanks for the cordial welcome. He and Mr Tickle appreciated the real Australian weather in Christchurch compared with the cold they had experienced in the south. He and Mr Tickle hoped that there would be a good “house” to-mor-row night. .

Mr Tickle briefly replied, endorsing remarks bv Mr Clarke that they would do as much coaching as possible during their stay. During proceedings items were given bv Mr C. Morris and party, and there was' also community singing.
