' \Villiam Tell went his best race for some time when he ran fourth in the Electric Handicap at New Brighton on Saturday. From l2yds behind he was ninth when two furlongs had been cov—ered. He threaded his way through a bunch of horses in the straight. and was going well in fourth place at the winning—post in a fast run race. WITH GREAT EASE. Although Elvo registered 2min 44sec from 36yds behind in the Electric Handicap decided over a. mile and a quarter at New Brighton on Saturday she won with ridiculous ease. The quality of her performance drew attention to her prospects as a sprinter. and she has previously shown that she can stay. Elvo is probably the m(.t improved pacer in training, and she is certain to win a race or two at the holiday meetings. . BROKE TW‘ICE. Although he made two breaks dur-. ing the contest for the New Brighton Handicap on Saturday \Vahnooka finished third after trotting the two miles in 4min 36 4-ssec from a 4min 525 cc mark. This was his first race this season and the son of Peterwah and Ena Bell has developed into a good-looking gelding. He is now six years old and is one of C. S. Donald's team for Auckland. where he should be a good stakeearner at the Christmas meeting. EARLY WINNER. Queen Author opened the eyes of a number of students of prospective winners when she chased Elvo home in the' Electric Handicap at New Brighton on Saturday. She began from 36de behind in a 2min 505ec class in a field of seventeen horses, and from eighth position with a mile to go she worked her way into fourth place at the bend for home. She paced brilliantly down the straight and beat the rest of the field as easily as Elvo beat her. Queen Author finished third in a two-mile race at Addington in November. and she has been seen to advantage in all kinds of footing. She should be a winner at the holiday meetings GUY JUNIOR. Despite substantial improvements in his handicap time. Guy Junior has failed to collect the big end of a prize this season. Following a lengthy spell, he ran second to Dollie Derby in a mile and a half race at \Vellington in September. In that event, he covered the mile and a half in 3min 25 l-ssec off a 3min 34sec mark. He was next seen out at Oamaru on Labour Day, where he was beaten by Camera in a twelve furlongs event, registering 3min 23 3-55ec off a 3min 33sec mark. His next outing was at Forbury in November, where he finished fifth in a mile and three furlongs race. At New Brighton, on Saturday, he began from 24yds behind ina3min 355ec class, and had a field of seventeen horses to contend with. He was ninth when four I'urlongs had been ‘covered, yet he battled his way through to gain sixth place at the bend for home. From that stage of the contest he paced home in great style to beat all but Jimmie de Om. On that occasion Guy junior travelled twelve furlongs in 3min 18 3-ssec. from a 3min 33sec mark. His consistent form cannot go long unrewarded. GREYMOUTH TROTS. A record number of nominations for the Greymouth Trotting Club's suln~ mer meeting- was received last night.
