DEEP ESCALATOR.

Work Almost Completed at Leicester Square.

The deepest escalator in the world is nearing completion at the new Leicester Square Underground Station. A London Transport official said to the “ News-Chronicle ” the other day: “ This escalator will be 80ft deep on the'' Piccadilly section of the station, and 161 ft 6in long. On the Hampstead Railvay the escalator will have a vertical rise of 58ft 9in and be 117 ft long.” The construction of the booking hall necessitated a large stretch of two roadways being undermined while the roof was being built. Fourteen thousand cubic yards of clay had to be removed and 750 tons of girders were used for the booking hall. A London County Council pipe subway running down Charing Cross Road had to be diverted. It would have run right through the booking hall. There will be five stairways to the booking hall of the station, which, will be opened early next spring. Meanwhile services are proceeding as usual with the existing station.
