ACCIDENT TO MINER.

Successful Claim for Compensation.

A compensation claim arising out of an accident in the Liverpool State Coal Mine. Runanga. was heard in the Arbitration Court yesterday afternoon before Mr Justice Frazer. Associated with his Honor were Messrs A. L. Monteith (employees' representative) and W. Cecil Prime (employers’ representative ). Alexander Williams, of Runanga. the plaintiff, in his statement of claim, said that he was employed in the mine and was iniured by a fall of debris on March 3. 1933. His left arm had to be amputated as a result. He had been paid weekly compensation during the greater part of 1933, and on December 30, 1933, was offered £591 17s lid in a lump sum. However. as plaintiff had been advised that a further operation was necessary, he sought additional compensation as the Court might decide. The statement of defence alleged that plaintiff had been overpaid in his compensation. It denied that plaintiff’s wages were £6 a week, but £4 18s Shd. The sum of £247 13s 5d had already been paid in compensation for the accident.

Mr P. J. O’Regan, of Wellington, appeared for plaintiff; and Mr F. A. Kitchinghain. of Greymouth, represented the Department. After hearing medical evidence, the Court awarded plaintiff full compensation to date, and for a further fortnight, and thereafter, until the expiry of the term of liability, compensation at the rate payable for the loss of an arm. Costs were awarded to plaintiff.
