EXTRA PENALTIES.
Prevent Australian Trainers Visiting N.Z. ONLY AUBURN LAD ARRIVES. The Victorian trotting trainer, W. M’Kay, who arrived at Epsom on Wednesday last, had his Auckland Royal Trotting Cup candidate, Auburn Lad, out walking on the centre of the course on Thursday, and the pacer’s condition attracted much attention. Although he was a week on the steamer, Auburn Lad looks in splendid heart and he is carrying more condition than when he visited Auckland last May, when he registered three seconds in four starts. M’Kay is anxiously awaiting the handicaps for the cup, but considers that Auburn Lad, not having won a race since he returned to Australia, will retain his New Zealand assessment of 4.26. M’Kay said he intended bringing Star Princess, Warinda Derby, Dalla Derby and the unbeaten three-year-old Tennessee Wood to New Zealand for the Auckland and subsequent meetings, but after studying the class of their opponents, and the fact tjiat his horses would receive the additional penalty imposed by the New Zealand Trotting Association, he changed his plans and brought only Auburn Lad, who would return home after the Auckland meeting. With two weeks to finish off his preparation at Epsom, M’Kay expects his pacer to strip very fit for the Royal Trotting Cup, but admits that on the form at Addington Indianapolis will be very hard to beat. M’Kay has a high opinion of his three-year-old Tennessee Wood, who three weeks ago won a good two miles handicap. “ I would have brought him for his three-vear-old race in the south,” he said, “ but I was doubtful how he would travel.” M’Kay stated that other Australian trainers had contemplated a visit to Auckland, but the extra penalties proved the stumbling-block. When these were removed there would be several enterprising trainers to pay New Zealand a visit. Speaking of Walla Walla, he said the Australian champion was better than ever this season, and showed form that he failed to strike during his visit to New Zealand. Walla Walla would race again after doing stud duty, his owner, L. Martin, having an idea of taking fresh records. Wirra Walla, a four-year-old son of Walla Walla, was one of the finest young pacers produced in Australia. Auburn Lad will be - treated to an easy time for a few days before setting out on a sound cup preparation. RE-ASSESSMENTS.
