VICTORIA LEAD.

Women Cricketers in Action. United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. MELBOURNE, December 8. The first match of the English women cricketers began in Victoria yesterday and was continued to-day. The teams England—Misses Archdale (captain). Snowball, Child, Hide, MacLagan, Partridge, Liehert, Spear, Richards, Turner, Taylor and Green (twelfth player). Victoria Misses Deane (captain), M’Larty, Haggis, Morsehead, Hills, Antonio, Clements, Tucker, Palmer, Kettels, George and Day (twelfth player). Owing to a misunderstanding regarding the Victorian Cricket Association’s requirements in respect of length of dress. most of the Victorian players yesterday wore dresses several inches too long, which hampered them. To-day they appeared in dresses of regulation length. Misses Antonio and Palmer were associated in a fine fifth wicket partnership for Australia. The game possessed all the smartness of male cricket. All bowling tactics were tried, and the batsmen were not afraid to hit out. The scores are as follows: ENGLAND. First Innings. CLUB MATCHES. Good Batting and Bowling Performances. On fast wickets bright batting was witnessed in the women’s cricket competions, five teams getting over the century. A particularly bright partnership was that between P. Bladder and S. Garner (Mai Moa), who stopped a rot when their side had lost three wickets for 7 runs against Argyle House. They tackled the bowling in an enterprising manner from the start and, showing a commendable variety of scoring shots, they added 110 runs before they were separated. Miss Blackler and Miss Garner also took the lion’s share of wickets. A further good bowling performance—six for 27—went to Miss A. King, of Pukaki, who was cracking on the pace and turning the ball to good effect.
