CHRISTMAS PARTY.

Canterbury Women's Club Entertain. “ FRIVOLOUS EVENING."

In thanking the performers at the Canterbury Women’s Club Christmas party on Saturday evening, Mrs R. T. Tosswill, the president, referred to the party as “ a frivolous evening,” and such it undoubtedly was. The original ideas of the hostesses, Mrs R. J. M’Laren and Mrs Henry Wyatt, were the source of much of the hilarity which broke out from all corners of the well-filled reception room. The singing of carols, the distribution of Christmas gifts, and finally, when supper time approached, the arrival of delicious slices of Christmas cake all helped to give the party the seasonal atmosphere. The large throng of guests, who streamed up the staircase to the club, were received by the two hostesses. Mrs M’Laren wore a crepe suede frock and fur-banded coatee in a delightful shade of pale beige, while Mrs W yatt was dressed in a black moss crepe frock trimmed with silver bead embroidery. The evening opened with an entertaining farce, “ The Family Group at the Photographers,” acted by members of the Kaneke Club under the direction of Mrs George Maginness. The cast was as follows: Grandma, Mrs George Maginness; Aunt Maria, Mrs F. M. Orchard; Emily, Miss W. Gillespie; Edie, Miss Eileen Henery; Harry, Miss Alice Freeman; Photographer, Miss Eileen Beer. Miss Rhona Vaughan’s artistry in her solo classical dance was warmly applauded, especially as Miss Vaughan was handicapped by the fact that she was dancing on carpet. The carols sung by Mr Fred Bullocks party were an outstanding success, and the audience joined vigorously in some of the choruses. Two members of the party, Mr Russell Sumner and Mr Robert Lake, also delighted the gathering with their solos. “ The Christmas Pie Parade,” led by the hostesses, followed by the “ Blackbirds ” (Mr Fred Bullock and party), initiated the distribution of Christmas gifts. Everyone present received some little memento of the season. The leaders of the various circles were presented separately with theirs, each being accompanied by an appropriate verse, which the recipient read aloud to the company. The party, which is the last big gathering to be held at the club this year, was a huge success. Mrs Tosswill thanked the hostesses and performers for a delightfully informal evening. ______
