£12,500 SUBSIDY.

Total Under Building Scheme. CHRISTCHURCH FIGURES. Tt was reported to the Citizens’ Unemployment Relief Committee this morning: by the certifying officer to the Unemployment Board (Mr M. Ross) that under the building subsidy scheme 300 applications had b'en received, the total value of the proposed work being £103.636 Os 9d. There had been approved 223 applications. for a total value of £153,036 10s. Sixteen applications had been declined and the amount of the subsidy was £12.532 4s 2d. A letter was received from the Canterbury Employers’ Association stating that the resolution regarding reduction of hours and increase in hourly rates of wages passed at the last meeting of the committee, had be:n held over for further consideration. More Alleged Abuses. There was considerable discussion of an application from the Canterbury Unemployed Workers’ Association for permission to send a deputation to the next meeting of the committee. The object of the deputation was exposure of further alleged abuses of the number 5 scheme. Mr F. W. J. Belton said that unless the request was more explicit the deputation should not be received. Mr W. E. Leadley supported the request, pointing out that alleged abuses of the number 5 scheme had been cited. It was resolved that the deputation should be received, but when sought it was nowhere to be found. The committee decided that its next me2ting would be held on Friday, Tanuary 28.
