» The costliest meal was a supper given by one of the most lavish of the Roman aristocrats. The supper was intended for only a dozen persons. Yet the cost was £48,000. A celebrated feast by a Roman emperor cost a fraction of £40.000. Suetonius says that the banquet consisted of 2000 different dishes of fish and 7000 different fowls. It is recorded that a single dish on the table of Emperor Heliogabalus was worth £40,000.
