WHANGAREI PACERS. L. M’Mahon has two charges, Red Hope and Superfine, in nice order, and both are working in satisfactory styde. Superfine was given a run at Epsom last Saturday and shaped as if the outing would do her a lot of good. She is a half-sister to’Pegaway, and greatly resembles him in appearance. TRAINER’S RECOVERY. B. Jarden is making a pleasing recovery from the motor accident in which he was involved while journeying from Winton to Dunedin last week. * * * » The seven-year-old pacing gelding Huon Pic is building a big reputation in Western Australia. In his early races in Perth he did not act like a potential champion, but he has improved considerably during the past two years. He has an imposing record of thirteen wins, thirteen seconds and seven thirds in 85 starts. Hifc stakeearnings amount to £1322. He ran the last mile of the Gloucester Cup on a small cinder track in 2min 12-Isec, and then could only finish fourth. IN BEST FORM. There is no doubt that Realty has returned to his best form, and he was going very smoothly to beat a field of well-performed pacers at the sports carnival at Epsom last Saturday. Realty is nicely placed in the handicaps, and the 3min 23sec class at the Auckland Christmas meeting should suit him admirably. TRAINER INJURED.. Mr T. G. Martin, owner and trainer of the pacer Trvment, was the victim ; of a rather painful accident at the Te | Awamutu track early this week. Whilst i examining one of his horse’s fore feet 1 he had his hand trodden on. and suffer;ed a broken fore-finger and severe 1 lacerations of the left hand.

Coloney Bogey is a smart four-year old pacer by Rev de Oro from Lady j Baronia. He is owned by J. Young, and has been responsible for some interesting track work. * * S|C T. H. M’Girr has a six-year-old trotter, Axiom, by Travis Axworthy from Sadie Dillon, that is engaging his attention. The gelding is a half-brother to Great Hope, winner of the New Zealand Trotting Cup 1923. * * ❖ * R. Townley has a five-year-old trotter Ann Parrish in his stable. She is by Guy Parrish from Ingle Bingen, who was by Nelson Bingen from the American mare Nearette. sje sje si: jj« A POPULAR SPORTSMAN. The popular Dunedin sportsman, Mr W. F. James, is making a satisfactory recovery from his operation. He has been "in Christchurch for some time, but hopes to return home next week. *.* ❖ * F. C.. Dunlevey has taken a fancy to Bracken, and she is going along nicely for her Auckland engagements. Bracken became unreliable at the barrier. She is a good stayer, and has only to gain confidence to win races. * *}: *j« * Floodlight is shaping like a prospective winner. The three-year-old paced a mile and a half at Addington last week in 3min 29sec, and did it easily. * * # * Wrecker is at present on the easy list. He may be given a preparation for racing in the : new year. COAST PROGRAMMES. Owners are reminded of the wealth of opportuntities on the West Coast at Christmas time, where the Westport, Westland, Greymouth and Reef ton Trotting Clubs will hold their meetings on dates that will be suitable to all. Good stakes and well arranged programmes have been published. In addition to the meetings mentioned, trotting events have also been included in the programmes of the Greymouth, Westland and Reefton Jockey Clubs. The Coast is an ideal place to spend Christmas and New Year. FOR CUP HORSES. The Wellington Trotting Club has issued an attractive programme for its summer meeting. The principal event is the Summer Handicap, of 500 sovs, and it is for horses that can do 4min 26sec or better. This event should be well patronised by owners, and a meeting of the champions will appeal to the public. Another item of importance, is the Kia Oro Handicap, of 200 sovs, for horses that can cover a mile and a quarter in 2min 43sec. The remainder of the programme is made up of suitable races for maiden and improving horses. The club is to be congratulated upon its enterprise, and it is hoped that owners will show their appreciation of the club’s progressive policy. Nominations will close on January 3, at 8 p.m. WORKING WELL. Since being sent along much faster in his work at Epsom Nimbus has improved considerably, and he is executing his tasks in great style. On Saturday morning last he was sent a mile and a half in company with Red Hope, and. pacing in his best style, just headed Red Hope in the run to the post, to register 3min 23sec. Nimbus was driven out, but did his work well. A PROMISING NOVICE. F. J. Smith’s Great Northern Derby candidate Bonny Azure was given a run at the Sports Carnival at Epsom on Saturday, and the chestnut filly was responsible for a very pleasing performance. She competed in the Cricket Coach Handicap, and, beginning very smartly, was always in a handy position, to eventually finish right on behind the leaders in fourth place. Bonny Azure has not been given any fast work for about three weeks owing to lameness, and her effort was very impressive. Her first appearance in a race will probably be at the Auckland Christmas meeting, and although the opposition will most likely be fairly strong Bonny Azure is very promising. A YOUNG CHAMPION.

The Richmond Handicap, of twc miles, decided at Melbourne recently, was an interesing race, and resulted in perhaps one of the finest three-year-olds in Australia winning from 36yds behind. Seldom is a horse of such tender years raced in seasoned company, but Tennessee Wood is a phenomenal youngster - . He is trained by W. M’Kay, who drove a well-judged race through out, and did not have the youngster distressed in the least at the end of such a long journey. Just before he had turned three years Tennessee Wood, when driven by Jack M’Kay, won an Association division at a 2min 22$sec rate for ten furlongs, and then gave promise of being a good one. Earlier in the month he improved on this by averaging better than 2min 20sec for a mile and a half. He is owned by Mr Arthur Mackin, whose hearty laugh is a great dispeller of depression. It was the intention to take this born racehorse to New Zealand, but as M’Kay’s trip will be but a flyng one with only Auburn Lad, it was deemed wise to leave the youngster home. He has certainly earned a short holiday, and is probably the only pacer of his age in Australia to win a race of two miles in 4min 39*sec. Tennessee Direct, the winner’s imported sire, showed great speed on the tracks, but was more or less unsound, though he won seven races, his best average being 2min 2l*sec. Recently his fullbrother in America was successful. Tennessee Wood’s grandsire is unhoppled Napoleon Direct, lmin 59|sec, still alive, and at the stud in America. Firewood, the unraced dam of Tennessee Wood, was named for Stud Book purposes, efforts to make her a racing proposition proving a failure. She was got by defunct Admiral Wood (a great racehorse in his day, but dying early in his stud career) from a mare by Tracey Alto. Firewood can be forgiven a lot by producing such a sensible and speedy youngster as Tennessee Wood. TROTTING FIXTURES. December 15—Hororata T.C. December 26—Gore T.C. December 26—Wairarapa T.C.
