MANY VISITORS.
Monterey Arrives From America. U.S. TRADE COMMISSION. (Special to the “ Star.”) AUCKLAND, November 30. The Matson liner, Monterey, arrived in the stream shortly before 7 o’clock this morning. The voyage was uneventful and average weather conditions prevailed. There were 86 passengers for Auckland and 274 through passengers. The liner brought a large quantity of mail. Mr E. C. Squire, United States Trade Commissioner in Australia, is returning after a three months holiday in America. He said that the depression there was not yet over and there were still many unemployed. However the financial panic was past and most of the capital that had been sent out of the country was coming back. The Government of the United States was contemplating new trade treaties with Australia and New Zealand, and it was hoped that an increased reciprocal trade would result. Mr S. F. Anderson, of the United States Postal Department, Washington, has come to New Zealand on his way to the Antarctic. He will sail by the Bear of Oakland from Port Chalmers, his mission being the handling of mails for and from Little America and the Byrd Antarctic Expedition. Dr A. A. King and Mrs King, who have been touring the United States, intend touring New Zealand for some weeks before returning to Australia. Mr E. H. Oppenheimer, of the Oppenheimer Casing Company, of Chicago, is on a business visit to New Zealand. Major P. Kerr-Smiley, a prominent racehorse owner of England, has come to the Dominion to spend a holiday. Mr Otto Sommer, a woolbroker, of Amsterdam, who is on a business visit to New Zealand, expressed disappointment at the prices realised at the recent wool sale in Auckland. |Mr Charles Root, a famous American baseball pitcher, is a through passenger with his family. He will spend a holiday in Australia.
