PREMIER’S VISIT.
Hon P. Collier, of Western Australia. The Premier of Western Australia (the Hon Philip Collier) arrived in Christchurch yesterday from the North Island, and this morning will leave for Mount Cook to continue his health tour of New Zealand. Mr Collier’s visit is purely a private one and although he has conversed with the Prime Minister (the Right Hon G. W. Forbes) and other members of the Ministry he is making no official calls and is not giving any interviews.
Mr Collier has not previously been in New Zealand and the three weeks he spent touring in the North Island impressed him with the wealth of natural endowments of the country. A member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia since 1905 as representative for Boulder, Mr Collier has had a notable political career and has held many portfolios. From 1911 to 1914 he was Minister of Mines and Rail wavs, and Minister of Mines and Water Supplies from 1914 to 1916. From 1917 until -1924 he was Leader of the Labour Opposition. In 1924 he first became Premier and held office until his party was defeated in 1930. He then became the Leader of the Opposition again. Last May Mr Collier once
more became Premier and he now holds, in addition, the portfolios of treasurer and Minister of Forests. Mr Collier will leave on his return to Australia in about three weeks’ time. He is accompanied bv his secretatv (Mr R. 11. Doig).
