Effect of Wages Increases on Expenditure. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, This Day. The financial results of railway working up to November 10 were announced to-day by the chairman of the Railways Board, Mr 11. IT. Sterling. For the four-weekly period which ended on that date expenditure increased by £19,059, and revenue by £20,145, resulting in an increase in net revenue for the period of £IOB6. For that portion of the financial j-ear from .April 1 to November 10, expenditure increased by £231.315 and revenue by £222,379. resulting in a decrease in net revenue of £8936. The 5 per cent increase in salaries and wages was responsible for an increase in expenditure of £11,306 for the four weeks ended November 10, as compared with the expenditure for the corresponding four weeks in the previous financial year, and the 5 per cent increase in salaries and wages from April 1 to November 10. 1934. resulted in an increase in expenditure of £88,819 as compared with expenditure for the same period of last year. In making a comparison of the net revenue position of the department, increased expenditure on salaries and wages resulting from the 5 per cent increase during the current year requires to be taken into consideration in assessing the relative results achieved during the periods above referred to.
