City Council Matters.
Dear Sir,—lt is hard to understand why Councillor Armstrong is so persistent in pointing out the high salaries of the staff on the City Council. Is it that he is studying the interests of the poor ratepayers? I would like to point out to Councillor Milliken that the Citizens’ Association, by exempting the tramway staff from the 10 per cent cut up to £3OO created a much greater privileged class than the Labour Party has created on the City Council by exempting the lowest paid workers. We have all the fuss over Councillor Thurston’s trip to Timaru. Is it not common knowledge that on other local boards certain officials make use of the board’s cars and petrol over week-ends, so why all the fuss? Then again, you can never stop the practice of getting some near relation or member of your church a position in the council or various boards, irrespective of whether it is a Labour board or a Citizens’. —I am, etc., RATEPAYER.
